POSITION: Independent Living /Social Security Advocate
(Full Time – Santa Rosa, Napa or Ukiah Office)
HOURS: 37.5 Hours per week
JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Independent Living/Social Security Advocate (Non-exempt)
DEFINITION: Provide work incentives pl anning and assistance to individuals with disabilities, receiving SSI/SSDI, and their families.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To develop, imple ment and evaluate the WIPA program .
- To comply with all reporting require ments including the organization and maintenance of the database.
- To collaborate and network with SSA, DOL, and all appropriate community organizations.
- To provide direct and indirect services to assist persons with disabilities achieve maximum independence.
- To assist individual with disabilities receiving SSI/SSDI to understand in-depth the current work incentives and programs available and for which the individual may be eligible.
- To provide I & R and technical assistance to individuals requesting assistance regarding adaptive equip ment and assistive technology issues.
- To Participate in the agency’s involve ment and collaboration with the Statewide AT Network.
- To participate in local, state and national strategies and techniques to develop and imple ment systems changes and outco mes affecting individuals with disabilities’ civil rights and participation in their community.
- To participate in the agency’s on-going Systems Change Plan develop ment and activities.
- To complete other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:
- Knowledge of and sensitivity toward persons with disabilities.
- Ability to complete the SSA training for CWIC.
- Knowledge of the values and concepts of the Independent Living Move ment.
- Knowledge of resources, services and all public benefit programs, medical terminology and awareness of cultural and political issues.
- Knowledge of SSA structure and ethical issues, confidentiality and conflict of interest.
- Ability to quickly learn, understand, and explain laws and regulations affecting persons with disabilities.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
- Ability to think clearly in e mergencies, complete work with deadlines, and work with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to write reports and prepare articles for publication.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret reports and legal docu ments pertaining to the operation of the Project.
- Ability to effectively present information to participants and their families, staff, public groups, Board of Directors, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Personal experience with disability.
- Experience as a disability rights advocate.

JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Independent Living Advocate (Branch Office - Ukiah) (Non-exempt)
DEFINITION: Responsible for providing direct and indirect services to assist persons with disabilities to achieve maximum independence.
RESPONSIBILITIES: To assist persons with disabilities:
- Secure permanent housing, as well as emergency shelter as needed.
- Access the available public benefits (i.e. Social Security disability Insurance, SSI, Medi-Cal, General Assistance, etc.), including assistance with the application process, reconsiderations, and administrative hearings.
- Deal with issues and complaints related to the Fair Housing Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Rehabilitation Act.
- Deal with Independent Living Skills training, peer support and access to support groups and other resources.
- To conduct outreach and educational activities to ensure those persons with disabilities and others are informed of DSLC’s services and mission.
- To network with local agencies and organizations to ensure comprehensive referral options.
- To engage in systems advocacy activities on behalf of person with disabilities.
- To complete all required forms, records and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
- To provide Information & Referral and technical assistance regarding adaptive equipment and assistive technology issues.
- To Participate in the agency’s involvement and collaboration with the Statewide AT Network.
- To participate in local, state and national strategies and techniques to develop and implement systems changes and outcomes affecting individuals with disabilities’ civil rights and participation in their community.
